Concept Sketching

Concept sketching can be intimidating at first.  Especially when it’s as open ended as “Do a concept sketch.  Now.  GO.  DO IT!”

But it doesn’t have to be as hard as it looks to stretch your imagination and workout your creativity.  Ironically, some of the most wild ideas are born of constraint.

So let’s start with that.  Stuff that your concept needs to be.  Narrowing down that big blue sky.  Compass points.

Get a few random nouns, adjectives, verbs, and pick a few.  You can use a concept generator if you like.  I pulled out my “Reckless Deck” and threw down three sets of three.

We’re going for quick workouts, so pick simple things at first.  Goggles.  That’s easy enough.  I’ll concept goggles.

I keep a few of the other pulls in mind.  Horns, carapace, futuristic helmet.  Maybe next time we’ll add in the animal companion, since that seems like it deserves its own sketch.

Next, make a quick list.  What defines goggles?  What do goggles do?  What do goggles need to fit the definition, and do the job?

For each of those things, pull some random objects.  Not goggles.  Anything but goggles.

Pill bugs, Kudu horns, mushrooms.  We can make those into a helmet, easy!

Pull attributes you like from those objects, and incorporate them into your concept.  I decide to use the shape of the horns to sweep back and out a lens and sensor array.  I figure that’d be great for enhancing depth measurements and such.  For pill bugs, I like the simple round shapes protecting intricate bits inside, so I use that for a faceplate that houses the viewing mechanisms, and suggests that the goggles are somewhat adjustable to the wearer.  Mushrooms…  Why not add a set of thin fins with a large surface area that serve both as thermal and sound sensors?

And… horny mushroom bug goggles.

It’s really not so hard.  Piece together the most unlikely components into something new and unique.  That’s a concept sketch!

Best of luck with yours!

P.S. here’s where to get the Reckless Deck!  www.recklessdeck.com/

Interesting idea. And all you did was pick three random things? Does it always have to be three?
