The Minions of Orcus by SteveArgyle The Minions of Orcus by SteveArgyle
The minions of Orcus, goat-pig-god-thing of mean nastyness.

You can't really tell, but they're actually just looking for a hug.

It's a little of both. I explain a bit of it in the above reply, so I'll spare everyone reading it again. I can post the preliminary renders if people want to see how the painting progresses from 3D mock-up to painting. Interested?

Yes, there's some 3D. I put together some basic props for proportion, sculpted a face for the foreground guy in zBrush, and rendered the pillars in the background before I started painting.

I'm going for some of the realism and precision of 3D, without loosing the mood and feel that painting provides. Still working that out...

Well it's clearly a good technique, with those jaw dropping results,do you just do a software render? I think you still managed to keep the painterly warmth so :highfive:

Yes, for this one I think I did a basic Maya Software render. Nowadays I use Mental Ray or Maxwell Renderer, and break things up into composite layers by light source, and add in some extra passes, like occlusion, reflection, and facing ratio. So that I can render it once, and dial in all the components without re-rendering.

Wow,so jack of all trades eh?:D

Makes sense, did it take you long to come up with that method?

Since most of the process is still painting, and I use 3D stuff in about every fourth or fifth painting, I don't spend a whole lot of time refining that part. But my background before illustrating full-time was in video games and pre-rendered cinematics. So it didn't take me too long to figure out a method that applied well to "underpainting."

Some of it was. I sculpted a crotchety old-guy face in zBrush for the guy in the foreground, and some simple pillars for the background.

The face and especially the eyes in the front character are amazing. He's definitely not jut a cardboard cut-out villain he has depth, personality and emotion. There's inner strength there - as well as the need for a hug :icondrowmoticon:

Thanks! I try and work some character into my... characters.

Your emoticon is particularly appropriate, as I'm painting a band of drow right now.

Yes, I do have a weakness for sugary awesomeness. I've gotten to be one of those chocolate-snobs who will seek out all the weird dark chocolates that come from rare cacao beans that only grow in the skulls of Tyrannosaurus' and stuff like that.

I try all the new Dew flavors. And while I like most of them, classic is still my favorite.
